Planned Giving at Rising Ground
The 1831 Society is a community for donors who wish to support Rising Ground’s work through a planned gift. The 1831 Society builds on a long tradition of philanthropy that has made Rising Ground’s 190-year history of service to the community possible. Our very existence — the founding of the Leake & Watts Orphan House in 1831 through the bequest of John George Leake, a wealthy New York lawyer with no heirs — was made possible through such a commitment to charitable giving. It is through the generosity of generations of supporters that we have been able to grow and evolve for nearly two centuries in our ongoing effort to meet the needs of children and families. For those looking to leave a legacy that provides hope and opportunity for generations to come, the 1831 Society celebrates this commitment.
Leave a legacy in support of our life-affirming work.
By joining this visionary group of donors, you receive special updates and a token of our appreciation along with recognition in our Annual Report. Learn more about ways to give and include Rising Ground in your planned giving below.

BEQUESTS
Making a bequest — a gift made in your will or living trust — is a meaningful way to provide funds for Rising Ground to continue our mission into the future. Your legacy allows us to continue providing supports and resources so New York City children, adults, and families can overcome adversity and thrive for generations to come. A bequest can be a specific amount or percentage of remainder of assets. While we advise legal consultation, sample bequest language might be: “I give and bequeath to Rising Ground, Inc., XX% of my total estate (or $XX).”
BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION
A beneficiary designation allows you to make an impactful gift, often more significant than what you might be able to give during your lifetime. Your legacy will ensure Rising Ground’s future ability to change lives. Designate Rising Ground, Inc., as the primary or contingent beneficiary for your:
• IRA Account • 401K • Life Insurance
CASH GIFT
When you make a cash gift, you’ll see your generosity immediately have an impact on the lives of New Yorkers in need. Gifts are considered a charitable contribution for federal income-tax purposes. Gifts can also be made in honor or memory of a loved one. You can make a gift now at www.RisingGround.org/Donate.
STOCK GIFTS
Stock gifts are a tax-advantage way to support New York children, adults, and families. You can change lives while avoiding capital-gain tax and receiving an income-tax deduction for the full market value on the date of gift. Our Development Office can assist you and your broker or agent with stock transfer instructions. Contact us at 212-437-3551 or SPyle@RisingGround.org to find out more.
DONOR ADVISED FUND
Through your Donor Advised Fund, you have the flexibility to recommend how much and how often funds are granted to Rising Ground.
IRA CHARITABLE ROLLOVER
For those 70.5 or older, you can give up to $100k from your IRA directly to Rising Ground without having to pay income tax. For those 72 or older, this gift can also satisfy your required minimum distribution.
