Nurturing Creativity & Positive Development

Even before birth, a child changes the world for parents. And parents make the world for their children. We help make sure that every child has a good start, from prenatal care for moms to exciting opportunities for children to learn as they grow.

Every child should be well prepared for school. Yet, children born into low-income families and high-needs neighborhoods often lag behind their higher-income peers because their environments have fewer resources. In the first few years – when intellectual, emotional and social development progress most rapidly – this disadvantage grows.

Our Bronx-based Early Head Start program meets the needs of our communities by giving children and their families the resources, knowledge, and skills to close that gap and build a solid foundation for a successful future.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Ensuring the Earliest Steps to Success For Infants, Toddlers and Pregnant Women

The path to success begins at birth so we support pregnant women with prenatal education to ensure they have access to all the medical and other services they need to give birth to a healthy baby. Then our bilingual Early Head Start program provides critical early childhood services to children from birth to 3 years old when their physical, educational and social-emotional development start. We support children in Family Child Care settings as well as providing Home-Based visiting services depending upon the needs of each family.

At each of our Family Child Care sites, up to four children explore a wide array of enriching social and educational activities as well as eat nutritious meals and snacks. Home visiting services focus on supporting parents as they learn to guide healthy child development and foster pre-literacy skills as well as nurture the parent-child relationship.

Children in both programs receive hearing, vision and dental screenings and families are provided with referrals to free/low-cost health clinics, food banks and other social services as needed.

Parents Are a Child’s First and Most Important Teacher

Would you believe that bringing a free book or toy, working for 30 minutes with a parent and their child twice a week for 2 years increases graduation by 30% and results in a 50% reduction in the need for special education? Something so simple has tremendous impact on families! Loving parents care for their children in the best way they know how, but they may not know the power they have to help their children out of poverty. For one mother, playing with her child was all about tickling and peek-a-boo. “I didn’t know we could teach about colors and numbers so easily. Look at how much he knows now!” A loving parent, she just needed the opportunity to learn how be her child’s first teacher.

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

    Providing Resources

The majority of the families in our ParentChild+ program — 95% — live in extreme poverty. They get by on less than $16,000 per year. That is simply not enough to buy the educational toys and books that those with higher incomes take for granted. So we bring free books and educational toys to their homes and help parents — who may never have had a book read to them as children — learn how to make play a learning experience. Our home visitors model for parents ways to incorporate learning about shapes, colors, numbers, and more into their daily life. As parents and children learn together, family relationships are strengthened. Our program has shown a 133% improvement in parent-child bonds.

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

    Closing the Achievement Gap

With their parents engaged as teachers and educational role models, children in this program don’t lag behind their middle- and upper-income peers. They start school equipped for success.

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

    Graduates of our program:

    • Enter kindergarten with skills an average of 10 months above their age.

    • Are 50% better prepared for elementary school than low-income children who do not attend the program.

    • Are less likely to need special education or remedial services.

    • Are less likely to repeat a grade.

    • Are more likely to graduate from high school.

    • Have a higher lifelong income of $600,000 to $1,000,000 more than their peers who did not participate in the program.

    [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

Parents, too, close a gap in their education. Many are immigrant families who do not speak English at home. After experiencing success with their children, many are inspired to pursue their own educational goals, including ESL classes or obtaining their GED. In this way, our program supports entire families and our community as a whole.

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive. Our Preschool Special Education programs make sure children with special needs and developmental delays get that opportunity.

At our Children’s Learning Center, we create a warm, trusting environment where children feel comfortable to explore the world around them and develop social and emotional skills so they can thrive and grow. Children in our Preschool Special Education programs have varied challenges, including speech impairments, learning disabilities, neurological impairments, developmental disabilities, emotional/behavioral challenges, sensory and cognitive delays, and autism spectrum disorder.

      [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

      Setting and Achieving Goals

No matter what the challenge, we help children progress toward their personal goals, such as learning to make eye contact, controlling aggressive behaviors and communicating through sign language. We meet each child’s specific developmental and learning objectives through play, individual instruction time, and classroom activities. Trained teachers tailor classroom activities to each child’s unique learning style, personality, strengths and challenges.

In specialized classes – with six, eight or ten children and a teacher and two teaching assistants – students receive individual or group occupational, physical, and speech therapy and the counseling needed to support their development. 40% of our special-education preschoolers in integrated settings move onto Kindergarten needing less intensive or no special education services.

      [/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]

      Supporting Parents

Because supporting a child with special needs brings unique challenges, we help parents learn too. Through conversations with teachers about daily activities and approaches to meet their children’s particular needs, we give parents the tools they need to continue supports at home so every child can achieve his or her potential. Parent support groups offer a safe space in which parents can discuss the challenges they face with other parents and share solutions.

The Ames Center is a licensed preschool special education program and childcare center serving preschool students with varying abilities between the ages of 18 months – 5 years utilizing a special class in an integrated setting model for children with varying needs and a special class model for those who require a more restrictive setting. In our 10- and 12-month preschool programs, the Ames Center utilizes a developmentally appropriate curriculum which supports children’s learning and development. This approach incorporates each child’s learning style, interests, preferences, personality, skills, and talents and prepares children for their school years by promoting creativity, pre-academic skills, socialization, and independence. Each of our classes adheres to the New York State Learning Standards.

The Ames Center offers three class settings based on student - teacher - teaching assistant ratios providing general instruction and to meet the needs determined by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) of children requiring special education. We offer 20:1:2 integrated classrooms and 10:1:2 and 6:1:2 special education classes. Several of our classrooms are bilingual (English / Spanish).

We offer the right setting for success.

The Ames Center offers three class settings based on student – teacher – teaching assistant ratios providing general instruction and to meet the needs determined by the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) of children requiring special education. We offer 20:1:2 integrated classrooms and 10:1:2 and 6:1:2 special education classes. Several of our classrooms are bilingual (English / Spanish).

We offer an environment for children to thrive.

The Ames Center provides a spacious, well equipped, fully air-conditioned modern facility. We provide children with two outdoor play areas and a summer swimming program with a certified lifeguard.

We offer other experiences and services to make sure children thrive.

Children at the Ames Center go on several field trips throughout the year as we help them explore the world around them and grow.

We offer various services to meet the needs (as determined on IEPs) of each child. Supportive services include speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and counseling.

          We work with families.

Our teachers and staff work with each family to keep them aware of their progress and to help parents understand how to ensure their growth and development outside of school. We additionally provide family support to those who need it.

          We provide day care services.

In addition to our preschool classes, the Ames Center provides child care services from 7:30 am – 6 pm daily. We are a licensed NY State-approved child care center.

              Community Schools

Student Success Begins with All-Around Support

Many factors shape a young person’s likelihood of succeeding in school. If you are worried about your next meal, how can you focus on your math test? If you lost sleep last night because there was a commotion in the hall of the homeless shelter where you live, it's hard to concentrate on chemistry. These are the realities of all too many students in New York City.

Schools today must be more than just a place to learn math and reading. When students are affected by homelessness, hunger, domestic violence, and other challenges that impact their ability to learn, their families and they need comprehensive support from partners they trust. That is where the community school model enters. With a holistic approach, we partner with school leadership to help students and their families with challenges that teachers and school administrators don't have the capacity or tools to address – everything from on-site counseling to linkage with food stamps and medical services.

As part of the city-wide School Renewal Program – a comprehensive, multi‐year, whole‐school reform effort to raise the performance of the City’s lowest performing schools and enable students attending these schools to succeed – Rising Ground partners with the JHS 123 – The Bronx Urban Community School - and School of the Performing Arts in the Bronx.

              Support Where You Need It

The community school model is based on the understanding that an integrated focus on academics, health and mental health services, social services, expanded after-school and summer learning opportunities, positive youth development, and family and community supports are critical to improving student achievement.

Under the guidance of our trained Social Workers and support staff, who are on site at the schools daily, all of these elements become part of the core function of the school. We also support extensive parent and community engagement. Each community school serves as a hub where these partners come together to coordinate and integrate a full range of supports based on the needs of individual students and their families. By providing social, emotional and academic enrichment supports for learning, personalization of services to students, and school-wide programming, we make students, families and communities stronger.

              One Size Doesn’t Fit All

Understanding that each community, school, family and student has their own special needs, our community schools take an individualized approach on every level. Each year our Community Schools plan a Community Forum, a collaborative and inclusive event, in which parents, teachers, school leaders, and community stakeholders meet to identify the strengths and needs of the school and the community and agree on strategies to address those needs. We then work together to solve problems, measure progress, and create a welcoming, positive environment where youth and their families can enjoy learning together.

Inspiring a Lifelong Love of Learning

Being 4-years-old is a magical time. So much to learn and so many ways to learn it! At this age, children are eager to explore, create and absorb ideas. Our free Universal Pre-Kindergarten Programs provide a nurturing environment in which children develop their language, cognitive, physical and social skills — learning about the world, being creative, and letting their imaginations soar.

Our programs are child-directed, building on the curiosity of the children themselves. Creative exploration and access to a rich array of learning opportunities give our children pre-literacy skills and promote self-esteem, just what they need to succeed in school and in life. Children thrive in classes with high adult-to-child ratios. Our teachers use an evidence-based curriculum, the Creative Curriculum, that is child-centered, encouraging children to explore their world.

              Extended Care

Children in our free Universal Pre-Kindergarten programs have the option to participate in our extended day program, which is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (7:30 a.m. in Yonkers), in support of working parents’ schedules. The sliding scale fee for the extended day is based on family income and is open to all families, including those with ACS vouchers.

              Encouraging Progress

Every child deserves the opportunity to learn and thrive. Our Preschool Special Education programs make sure children with special needs and developmental delays get that opportunity, too.

We create a warm, trusting environment where children feel comfortable to explore the world around them and develop social and emotional skills so they can thrive and grow. Children in our Preschool Special Education programs have varied challenges, including speech impairments, learning disabilities, neurological impairments, developmental disabilities, emotional/behavioral challenges and autism.

Whether in integrated classes alongside their typically developing peers or in small, specialized classes, students also receive individual or group occupational, physical, and speech therapy and the counseling needed to support their development.

For those with more significant needs, specialized preschool classes – with six, eight or ten children and a teacher and two teaching assistants – provide the intensive services children need.

40% of our special-education preschoolers in integrated settings move onto Kindergarten needing less intensive or no special education services.
